Homemade Hot Chocolate
I promise I don’t put Bourbon in everything I make, even though sometimes it feels that way.
There’s something very tactile and cathartic about a hot drink. The curved sides of a cup warm the skin while steam extracts the day’s tensions from the face. Coffee, tea, a hot toddy … they all scratch a certain corner of the soul, somehow absorbing thoughts and worries with each liquid sip. When heated, a collection of pantry and fridge standards - cocoa powder, sugar, salt, milk, and vanilla - transcend their humble place on the shelf to form a luscious liquid elixir worthy of a holiday gathering, or a Monday night. Additions like cayenne pepper and Bourbon warm the back of the throat and make something really special that’s worth sharing.
